Is There Really Such A Thing As A Good Fanbase?

Journal Entry: Thu Sep 19, 2013, 6:37 PM

I've been beginning to wonder about that recently :iconhmmplz:. No matter which fandom I go to, all I see for the most part is bitching/complaining about "raped childhoods" and rabid fanboys/fangirls who draw terrible yaoi art of characters who'd NEVER get together because if they did, then the universe would spin off of its reality and explode :iconheavystareplz:. I'm not kidding when I say this either as very recently, I got back into "Happy Tree Friends" (to sum it up, it's a hilarious show about cute cartoon animals who get killed in the most epic ways possible ) and one day, I decided to look up some Fan Art of the show here... on Deviant Art...... which I regret very much so :iconfacepalmplz:. Instead of getting what Happy Tree Friends is about (as explained in my summary in the previous parenthesis), I got to see terrible bishie/yaoi anime styled versions of the characters. In fact, there was so many of these abominations that I barely faved anything because there was hardly anything that truly had to do with the actual show. My question is.... WHY?! How the hell is something like YAOI born out of something as murderous and violent as Happy Tree Friends?! Can someone please tell me because I seriously don't understand what's so sexually attractive about seeing cartoon animals being brutally murdered :iconfacepalmsplz:.

Aside from that, even something as clean as the Superman and Godzilla fandom is full of retards. Seriously, why is this debate about Godzilla vs Zilla still going on? We have already seen Godzilla beat the shit out of Zilla in Final Wars so... this debate shouldn't even exist. As for Superman... do I need to explain at all? Put it this way, according to our "brilliant" fanboys, too many people died in Man of Steel and Superman doesn't kill. Not only are both of these statements false but they're the most overused dumbass excuses used to hate on the film aside from the movie being a "destruction porn" :iconlooolplz:.

Oh yeah, it doesn't stop there either. The Transformers fandom is clean for the most part but all the fans do is bitch and complain. Everytime I watch a fight scene from the films, listen to the awesome soundtrack, or just see fan art based on the films I see hundreds of comments saying "fuck Michael Bay he raped my childhood". Really guys?! As far as I'm concerned, Michael Bay hasn't changed your childhoods, your childhoods are still the same and shall forever remain the same. Plus just think about it for a moment because whether you love or hate the films, Michael Bay hasn't "raped" the franchise. In fact, he's actually made the franchise earn more money and recognition than ever before as more shows, spin-offs, and games have been created due to the success of the films. So in a nutshell, Michael Bay is indirectly responsible for creating better Transformers shows and games. Plus, has anyone forgotten that the sole purpose of Transformers is to sell toys? So really, how exactly is he "raping" your childhood :iconfacepalmplz:? I'm not a fan of the director (as his personal life and what he plans on doing with TMNT is definitely questionable) but come on guys, he's not the worst that's ever happened to the franchise :iconheavystareplz:.

The exact same thing can be said for the "Skylanders" series as people keep claiming that Spyro has been "raped". I'll admit, Spyro does look like the bastard child of Count Dracula and the Battle Toads but does that mean that Skylanders is a bad game? Hell no. Quite frankly, Spyro's design may be important but the most important part of ANY GAME IS THE GAMEPLAY.

Must I go on? Okay, Resident Evil's fanbase is another one of those fanbases that never stop bitching because the recent games aren't "scary" anymore. I'll admit, Resident Evil was scary when I was 8 years old but now... not so much. As far as I'm concerned, "scares" is the least of Resident Evil's problems . This should come as a surprise to no one but Sonic's fan base is the prime example of a shitty fan base in fact so much so that SEGA hardly ever listens to them :XD:. I used to love Sonic but the fan base was so fucking stupid that my interest in Sonic was nearly killed and the My Little Pony franchise has such a laughable fan base that I decided to completely discard any desire I had for even seeing the show.

Yes I know, this is pretty much a journal rant but can someone please answer my question: Is there really such a thing as a good fan base? I'm just curious because I've noticed recently that so many fan bases that I could tolerate are becoming utterly retarded. Is it because the quality of fandoms are decreasing or am I just looking in the wrong places :iconsadguyplz:?

Lol :D
I agree that there seems to be a bunch of nonsense fans pretty much everywhere, but we shouldn't let a few over opinionated jerks ruin it for everyone else.  It's cool if a group of people liking the same thing try to keep some tradition.  However there is a point when trying to "defend" something just ends up killing the whole franchise.

I know I'm a big d**k for saying this.
75% of the fan stuff I see on DA I honestly don't understand or really even care.  If I like it then woop de freaking doo! If I don't then... *shrugs
From my own experiences on DA, I've realized that there are really high number of kaiju snobs out there.

I think every fanbase has its ups and downs - some more than others.

Pretty much agree with you. Also, another thing about the Godzilla fandom:

"We want a trailer", "Legendary doesn't know how to market this movie, and it will fail because there isn't enough articles about it, like there are of the Marvel superhero films, it's going to like 1998 again".

Thanx for your input :). I won't lie, I was one of those who was mad because there was no Godzilla trailer but my reason was because they said that something "big" was going to happen over the weekend and yet nothing happened (with the exception that only those who went to Comic Con got to witness the encounter). I just wish that Legendary could've stated that the "big" event was a Comic Con exclusive that way we wouldn't of all been teased so much to the point where we were let down when we figured out that it was just a Comic Con exclusive.

In a nutshell, I can understand the fan reaction to the "lack of Godzilla trailer" which many condemn as it was a pretty stupid move on Legendary's part for not stating that the "something big" was a Comic Con exclusive.

Welcome

I think the big thing was the Godzilla Encounter thing. While I admit, I was pissed as well, I know that movie had just finished filming a few days before.
